[ Year Zero longread · redesign brief ]
Проявка
The longread is a restricted archive opened through a compromised government terminal. Year Zero hid its content under surfaces: a toilet stall, a tour shirt, a spectrogram, a heat‑sensitive coating, a picture you had to scratch. The page keeps that rule. Its official layer is dirty‑white paper with a calm reading column. Its leak layer is near‑black charcoal, where intercepted material surfaces. Every chapter has one moment where something surfaces because the reader acted.
The central question stays the article's own: where does an album end when its story continues through websites, objects, hidden messages and the audience? The interface answers through discovery. Evidence is filed and numbered (YZ‑E01…E08), every artifact opens as a case file, and a thin warning‑red wire on the left rail touches each piece of evidence and becomes the connection map in chapter 4.
Colour comes from the album: scorched black, charcoal, photocopy paper and ash, with Year Zero's burnt red‑orange as the only signal colour. It marks only what surfaced or what the reader handled: the wire, revealed letters, the found nodes, the spectrogram glow. Ash marks the official voice.
v3 refinement what changed from the first build
| Area | Change | Why |
| Entry | A Bureau of Morality access terminal opens the page once per session. Its four status lines follow real readiness (script running, fonts loaded, canvases built). If everything is ready it takes under a second; «Skip intro» and Esc close it at once. It closes with one 210ms band slip, then a hard cut. | The reader enters the archive the way the ARG framed its world: through an institution. The copy is labelled on screen as fictional and says the site scans nothing. |
| Type | No serif and no italics. Roboto Flex (condensed, 820) for display, IBM Plex Sans for reading, IBM Plex Mono for system text. All three cover Cyrillic. | An institutional, upright voice. The former italic moments (deck, pivot, definition, asides) now use weight and a hairline rule. |
| Archive layer | Case numbers, the ДСП classification label, a file‑opened stamp, a session clock, evidence numbers on every tag, black label tape instead of rotated stickers. | Structure as bureaucratic record, using a document convention a Russian reader recognises. |
| Texture | Grain only behind display sections. Placeholders read as photocopies of missing images (toner grain, streaks, one compression band). Body text never sits on texture. | Degraded media without hurting legibility. |
| Artifacts | Flash drive, shirt print, Parepin site, spectrogram and CD are marked off in place: «Приобщить E0x» stamps the photo «Приобщено к делу», the button turns into «✓ В деле», and the node lights up on the map. No windows open. | Readers examine evidence instead of only scrolling past it. |
| Decode | The CD's binary is now the ASCII code of exterminal.net. Readers decode it byte by byte, or press «расшифровать всё». | The text says the code decoded to that address; the reader repeats the step. The pattern is labelled as a reconstruction, not a scan. |
| Audio | The fake ▶ cues became real audio slots with play/pause and mute. They stay disabled and read «аудио не подключено» until a file is attached. Nothing autoplays. | No pretend controls. |
| Navigation | A file index bar with clickable chapters, per‑chapter progress, overall percent and the current chapter in red. View tools moved to the bottom right. | Readers can see where they are and jump. |
v10 27 Oct · on top of v9
- No more black on black: everything that was drawn in black is now white — redaction bars, the censor bar on «репрессивное», the strike line, the shirt and fragment icons, the Parepin window frame and address bar, the ≠ boxes (fill blue at «=»), the Gesamtkunstwerk image blocks (white outlines), the listen rules, byte borders, the wave baseline.
- Type (10.1): headings stay in Tektur; all other text in Tonos Mono Variable (Heading Now dropped).
- Type (10.0, superseded): headings set in Heading Now 74 Regular, all other text in Tonos Mono Variable. Neither font is on Google Fonts, so the page uses them when they are installed on the viewer's computer and falls back to Tektur / IBM Plex Mono otherwise; the font files can be embedded in the @font-face rules at the top of the style block.
v9 27 Oct · on top of v8
- Black and white: every section is now on a true black ground (#000) with white text (#fff); grey secondary text is white too. Paper slabs (voices, Parepin window, shirt text, crowd stage) are black with white outlines; label tapes are black with a white outline. Blue stays as the signal colour. Section grain removed; the moving page noise is kept, very faint.
v8 27 Oct · on top of v7
- Evidence: no more case-file windows. «Приобщить» marks a piece off in place (stamp + «✓ В деле»), and it still lights up on the map.
- Голоса из будущего: shorter pin, the disc starts rolling at once, the title sits in the upper part of the screen, no empty padding after it.
- Spectrogram: the «схема · кадры видео — заглушка» label is gone; the hand frame now breaks in over the whole screen as torn glitch bursts, holds, and cuts out like a CRT.
- Map: after the copies tile out, blue curves draw between them, spreading outward from the original map.
v7 26 Oct · on top of v6
- Removed: «Skip intro» (Esc still closes the Bureau screen), «Заново» and «Осмотреть E07», the 01/04 counters, the map counter and legend, the white box on the map paragraph (the text now sits under the map).
- Reverted: the «Вход» opener is back to heading size and unpinned; «Голоса из будущего» now fits inside the rolling disc.
- New: band photos slide in from the right; «альбому?» with one plain question mark (changed at your request from «??»); ≠ sequence for «знак равенства»; censor bar on «репрессивное» retracts with scroll; the sound wave sits under its phrase in the same pin; the Presence hand spans the whole screen; Thermo-CD moved up with a note that heat reveals the digits; «Another Version of the Truth.» is typed into an address bar; the redaction pin ends with «Art Is Resistance» emerging; a crowd silhouette rises over «не один человек»; the map shrinks and tiles into 25 copies; «возможности им управлять.» drops and is struck through; the footer's sources slide out before the author credit.
v6 26 Oct · on top of v5
- Pacing: every big phrase is a short pin and its words float in before the page moves on; «определить…» starts scattered and settles; question two slides in from the right edge.
- Chapter titles: pinned full-screen until their device completes; «Голоса из будущего» is uncovered by a disc rolling right to left (a circle for now).
- Title: larger (condensed width, fitted to 70% of the screen), pinned until every word has arrived.
- New moments: band-photo placeholders beside the opening question; two image slots sliding in from the left after «…являлся их создателем.»; a pinned sound wave recorded left to right after «звукозаписи»; full-screen horizontal lyric lines in Capital G (slots to paste the lines into); an Art Is Resistance flag flashing through a tear when The Good Soldier enters; «репрессивное» under a censor bar.
- Removed: the "fictional interface" note, the blue seam strips on chapter openers, «Улика 03/04», «[ официальное описание NIN ]».
- Grain: a semi-transparent animated film grain over the whole page (static with reduced motion).
v5 26 Oct · on top of v4
- Headings: Tektur at one weight (500) and width; accent by colour only.
- Full-screen phrases: the title, the two questions and «Песня закончилась…» are pinned; their size is fitted to the screen and each word floats in with scroll.
- Title page: buried under moving static and heavy tearing after the Bureau screen; scrolling clears it and the title words arrive.
- Chapter openers: numerals removed; a title glitches out once scrolled past and returns when you scroll back.
- Spectrogram: longer pin; after the sweep, 24 glitching frames lock in the outline of the Presence. The frames are generated stand-ins: put real video stills in
data-frames on the figure (comma-separated image URLs) and they replace them.
- Pages: a horizontal, pinned run through iamtryingtobelieve.com, exterminal.net, Another Version of the Truth and the forum, each with a screenshot slot and the article's own sentence.
- Redaction: midway through clearing the bars, a short tear flashes an «Art Is Resistance» image slot (placeholder until the real image is added).
- Gesamtkunstwerk: pinned; black placeholder blocks for images build up, the word fills the screen, the definition floats in, then it unpins.
- Footer: credits and view tools slide up only at the very end.
v4 26 Oct · supersedes the colour, type and glitch notes below
- Colour: the signal colour is blue (#1c1bff) on cool greys; the red-orange is gone everywhere, including canvases and glitches.
- Type, three levels: headings in Tektur (one size, ≈6.6cqw, uppercase), body in IBM Plex Sans 18/30, small text in IBM Plex Mono 11.5.
- Bureau screen: on every load and refresh, ≈5.5s; the bar never passes what has actually loaded; «Skip intro» and Esc work.
- Header: one 2px progress line. The evidence counter is removed.
- Glitch: nothing glitches text on its own. On a chapter change, a black↔paper cut and the intro exit, the visible page really tears: an SVG displacement filter shifts horizontal bands of the actual pixels and a blue ghost offsets them, over grid-aligned macroblocks with datamosh drips and interlace lines (≈300ms).
- Voices: brutalist paper slabs with the name, exposed 1px rules, a flat portrait block, raw text; no frames or label chips.
- Scratch: layer A is removed in grid-snapped rectangles, some strips torn sideways first.
- Redaction: the quote starts fully covered; the section pins and the bars clear word by word in hard steps; it unpins only when every bar is gone.
What the references gave observed → used where
| Reference | What it actually does (observed) | What this redesign takes | Where |
Linkin Park linkinparkband.tilda.ws | Sentences cut into fragments with varying indents that cascade across the width. A white headphone cable snakes through the text blocks. The album title is split around the disc ("A THOUSAND [disc] SUNS"). Single words boxed in gray. Bracketed caps quotes with a speaker label. Repeated photo in a 2×2 grid as the opener. | Cascade only for short lead lines, never body copy. The cable becomes the evidence wire. Title split around the disc becomes EXTERMINAL [CD] .NET. Boxed words become red marks. | Cascade lead 01 · wire throughout · CD 02 |
ABBA abbaband.tilda.ws | A turntable stays pinned while scenes change around it. Giant thin names with cut‑out heads sitting on top. A justified text block cropped at the screen edge. Archive footage inside a CRT TV frame with RGB glitch. Song titles as a full‑screen texture. | Pinned object for the shirt stage. Giant thin names + cut‑out heads for the two song voices. No two consecutive sections use the same composition. Long text runs never exceed about one and a half screens before a pause, an image or a quote.
Motion system three moments · everything else restrained
| Moment | Trigger | Sequence | Timing | Fallback |
| A · Letters → domain | Sticky stage, 300vh, scroll‑linked (0→1) | 0–.25 print appears; .08–.25 the 18 highlighted letters turn red, the rest dim to 25%; .30–.60 the letters fly out of the print and line up as I AM TRYING TO BELIEVE; .68–.85 the phrase compresses into an address bar: iamtryingtobelieve.com. Text paragraphs scroll normally beside it. | Linked to scroll, ~2 screens. Ease: expo‑out on each phase. | Reduced: diagram shows print with red letters, phrase and domain all at once. Mobile: same stage, visual pinned in the top 58%, text cards pass over the bottom. |
| B · Scratch the picture | Pointer down + drag (mouse); on touch only after "Стирать пальцем" is armed, so page scroll is never captured | On first entry a ghost stroke wipes a short path (demonstrates the gesture). Reader erases layer A; counter shows % erased. At 35% the forum link unlocks and the map node turns red. | Ghost stroke 900ms once. Layer toggle fades 900ms. | Reduced / keyboard: "Показать слой Б" button crossfades the layers. Both layers carry their labels so nothing is hidden from screen readers. |
| C · The wire becomes the map | Scroll position (wire tip runs at 65% of viewport height); map is a 300vh sticky stage | Wire draws ahead of the reader and lights each evidence dot as it passes (counter 01→11). In the map, nodes you passed are solid, nodes you interacted with glow red; 13 edges draw one after another, each when a fragment "makes you rethink another". | Edge stagger 4.5% of stage progress; each edge draws over 18%. | Reduced: wire drawn fully on load, map shows all edges. Mobile: wire hidden; the bottom counter carries the same count, map uses a taller node layout. |
Supporting motion (all scroll‑linked, low amplitude, never starts invisible): reveal = opacity .25→1 + 18px rise over the first 75% of entry; display lines unmask top‑down; chapter devices (01 aperture opens, 02 letters flatten off a waveform, 03 lower half slips 2.6cqw and stays slipped, 04 four strips align); H1 lines drift ±6–12cqw in opposite directions as the opening scrolls away; questions and four‑readers are pinned pauses; the redaction bars retract word by word; the final sentence settles from scattered words.
Timing tokens: fast 180ms (hover, toggles) · base 420ms (state changes) · slow 900ms (layer crossfade, ghost stroke). Ease: cubic‑bezier(.16,1,.3,1). No scroll hijacking: every sticky stage scrolls at native speed and its text stays in the DOM and readable at every frame.
Reduced motion (system setting or the toolbar toggle): all sticky stages collapse to normal flow at their final state, scroll‑linked reveals are off, the wire is drawn in full, the scratch becomes a two‑state toggle. The full story and every interaction remain.

Typography research measured at 1440px, 22 Oct
The second pass looked at how the references set their big phrases: size against the viewport, how many appear per screen, how a phrase is broken into lines, and how each line is treated.
| Reference | Big phrases (measured) | Taken into Year Zero as |
| Fight Club | Headings at 130–140px (9–9.7vw), tracking −0.07em, three lines: line 2 indented ≈30%, weights alternate 600 / 700, the last line on a red bar. Dialogue at 44px (3.1vw) alternating left/right. A pinned list at 100px. ≈2 big phrases per screen. | Stagger: condensed 820 / wide hairline 160 alternating, line 2 indented, last line on the signal bar. The basis of the whole system. |
| war.artmilitonian | 140px (9.7vw) headline, one word per line, each word set twice (solid + 1px outline). Figures (6,114 / 390) at the same size. A phrase broken into 6 short caps chunks at 68px, at 20–40% opacity with the key figure more opaque. | Ghost: ash lines with an outline copy slightly off register, one key phrase in full ink. |
| after‑life | Title words scattered at 100px with drifting duplicate copies. A centred stack, one word per line at 70px («ГОВОРЯТ, / ДУША / ВЕСИТ / 21 ГРАММ»). A counter at 120px. ≈3 big phrases per screen. | Stack: short conclusions centred, one chunk per line, the last line in signal red. |
| …/oct10 | Date set one word per line at 95px (6.6vw) in red, over a caps body block; «141 countries / support Ukraine» stacked in outline at 60px. | One chunk per line in the stack; red only on the closing line. |
| ABBA | Names at 100px mixing weights inside one word (initial 700, the rest 300); song titles as 90px caps walls; 2.4 big phrases per screen. | Mix: hairline wide lines with one heavy condensed key word in red. |
| Punk Rock | Section words at 140–180px (10–12.5vw) with small 50px stacked labels overlapping them; a vertical title at 118px. | Scale contrast: phrases at 7–9vw against 18px body (≈7×). |
| Linkin Park | Section titles at only 40px caps, broken into 2–3 lines that arrive from off‑screen copies; «A THOUSAND [disc] SUNS» at 100px. | Lines entering from alternating sides; the existing EXTERMINAL [disc] .NET. |
Big‑phrase system 19 phrases taken from the text, wording unchanged
Headers, conclusions and questions are lifted out of their paragraphs as display moments; the paragraph text before and after them stays in place, so reading order and wording are exactly the article's. Body text stays 18px. Five treatments rotate so no two neighbours look alike: stagger (lines from alternating sides, last on a red bar), question (stagger, the question mark stamps in last), stack (centred, lines step on), ghost (outline copy converges onto ash lines, one key phrase in ink), mix (hairline with one heavy red phrase). Phrases fit their widest line to the column; on phones they wrap at 34px instead of shrinking further. Lines entering from the side is the Linkin Park move; the converging outline is war.artmilitonian; the stepped stack is after‑life.
Motion research read from each reference's own animation data, 22 Oct
Six of the seven references are built in Tilda Zero Block (step-by-step animations stored as data-animate-sbs attributes); the two war.artmilitonian pages are Readymag (animation steps stored in the page model). I read those settings directly in the browser instead of guessing from screenshots.
| Reference | What its scroll motion actually does (measured) | Taken into Year Zero as |
| Linkin Park | 74 scroll-linked steps. Most are hard on/off pops: opacity 1→0→1 inside 5–8px of scroll, staggered by trigger offsets 150–400px. A disc travels 1900px with 560° rotation over 450px of scroll; a cable shape moves 217/1078px and scales 1.66 over 1150px. A few looping −8° wobbles and a 3s fade on block entry. | Declassify bars retracting in four hard steps (tags, evidence, credits, CD bytes in sequence). The thermo‑CD rolling in from the right with 560° of rotation. |
| ABBA | ≈650 small shapes blinking on 100–200ms opacity loops with staggered delays (light grid). 24 song-title rows slide 260px over 200px of scroll; member names run −1200px while pinned; marquees loop over 20s. 36 parallax layers. | A texture wall of the five fragments drifting in opposite directions behind the scatter field. |
| Punk Rock | 57 images run −3600px horizontally while the block is pinned (a horizontal gallery driven by vertical scroll). Captions stack in and out at offsets 260–480px while pinned. Collage pieces flicker on entry (opacity 0/1 over 200–600ms) and tilt ±2–4°. | Image flicker reused as the CRT power-on of the two voice portraits. |
| Fight Club | 113 elements fade 0→1 over 200px of scroll, staggered by offsets 250–307px (line-by-line text); 62 dialogue lines over just 60px (hard cuts). Character columns pin for ~515px. A list ("Routine / Boring work…") pins and scales 0→0.3→1.2→1.35 then fades. Images strobe to 0.05 opacity on entry. | Transmission: every paragraph arrives over its entry and dims as it leaves. The closing question stamps down line by line from 1.45× scale. |
| after‑life | 94 scroll steps. The section label («Введение») stays fixed for 600px then fades over 50px; paragraphs fade out over 100px after they pass; a figure pins for 2080px while labels fly in; a 10→1 countdown on entry; the title drifts on 7–12s loops. | Paragraph exit fade (part of transmission), the sticky chapter spine, the map's connection counter. |
| war.artmilitonian | ≈360 Readymag scroll steps. Photos breathe from scale 103 to 99 over 3000px; text fades in after 1200px; blocks leave with opacity 100→0 and scale 100→97; headline lines move sideways with rotation; multi-step items fade in, rise, then move away scaling. | Breathing on every missing image; the title page receding as you scroll off it. |
| …/oct10 | Long crossfades between layered photos (opacity 0→100 over 2000–3000px), list items fading in with scale 98→100 every ~100px, an image rising 651px while scaling to 110. | The Parepin screenshot crossfading from the official version to the suspected one as the section passes. |
Scroll motion, section by section every section moves; reduced motion turns all of it off
| Section | Scroll-triggered motion |
| 00 Title | H1 lines shear apart in opposite directions; deck, alternate title and timestamp recede (fade + 0.97 scale) as the page scrolls off; display type splits channels on fast scroll. |
| Chapter openers | Corrupted strip runs in along the top edge; document rule draws; numeral and title arrive sliced; each keeps its own device (aperture, waveform, slip, montage). |
| 01 Evidence 01 | Cascade unmasks; tag and photo declassify in hard steps; paragraphs transmit; the «??» underline draws as it is read; the photo breathes. |
| 01 Shirt | Pinned letters → phrase → address (signature A); tags declassify. |
| 01 Parepin | Frame declassifies; callout lines draw; the suspected version bleeds through the screenshot behind a red scan line. |
| 01 Questions | Pinned pause, Q2 rises as Q1 dims. |
| 02 Intent / NIN | Name tapes declassify; paragraphs transmit; the official grey highlight sweeps across the quote. |
| 02 Voices | Giant names slide; portraits power on like a CRT; paragraphs transmit. |
| 02 Quote / pivot | Quote unmasks and its waveform draws; pivot hairline draws, line unmasks. |
| 02 Spectrogram | Pinned sweep reveals the hand (signature). |
| 02 Thermo‑CD | Disc rolls in with 560°, EXTERMINAL slides out of it, .NET appears; bytes declassify one after another. |
| 03 Scratch / redaction | Ghost stroke on entry; redaction bars retract word by word. |
| 03 Theory | Term tapes declassify; definition rule draws; paragraphs transmit. |
| 03 Fragments | Fragments drift apart; a wall of their names drifts in opposite directions behind them. |
| 04 Readers | Pinned, four people accumulate. |
| 04 Question | Three lines stamp down from 1.45× into place, one after another. |
| 04 Pair | The grey line drifts left as you pass; the statement transmits. |
| 04 Map | Edges draw in sequence with a live «связей 00 / 13» counter. |
| 04 Return | Paragraphs transmit and dim on exit. |
| Ending | Scattered words settle; credits declassify. |
Year Zero palette from the album, not from cyberpunk
The colours come from the album's own artwork: the burnt red‑orange sky of the cover over scorched black, with the glow around the Presence as the brightest value. Photocopy paper and ash carry the official, bureaucratic layer. The red‑orange is the one signal colour. CCTV cyan never appears as a UI colour; it exists only as the second channel when the picture splits.
Glitch system every effect answers an action
| Effect | Trigger | What happens | Limits |
| Signal split | Scroll speed | Display type separates into red‑orange and cyan channels (up to 5px) while you scroll fast, then decays to a clean frame within ~0.3s. | Display type only. At rest the text is clean. |
| Slice | A title entering the screen | Chapter numerals, ВХОД, the statement, the question and the pair quote arrive torn into two displaced colour bands that close up before the line reaches reading position. | Scroll‑linked, so it moves only as fast as the reader. |
| Decode | First view of a label | Case numbers, label tapes and figure captions resolve from noise characters into text (0.3–0.7s, once). | Screen readers get the real text through aria‑label. |
| Tracking band | Ambient on missing images | A faint VHS tracking error drifts down each placeholder every 7.5s. | Never over running text. |
| Inspection jolt | Hover / focus on evidence | The image knocks off register for three frames with a channel split; nav links, buttons and «Осмотреть» split briefly on hover. | Once per hover. |
| TV interference | Chapter change (6 frames), a cut between black and paper sections (3 frames), very fast scrolling (3 frames), the archive opening (5 frames) | Over the whole screen for 135–270ms: torn noise bands, signal-red and cyan strips, scanlines, a vertical-hold bar on big bursts, and the page itself jolts sideways a few pixels. Display type splits channels for the same frames. | Translucent, so brightness never jumps. At most one burst per 0.9s (2.2s for scroll speed). Off with reduced motion. |
| Seam | Static | A corrupted data strip sits on the top edge of each chapter opener, where an official page cuts to an intercepted one. | 7px. |
| Terminal | Intro | The seal jolts off register every 2.6s, a tracking band drifts down the screen, and the exit tear splits channels before the hard cut. | Total exit 280ms. |
No effect changes brightness in a flash, none loops over body text, and reduced motion (system setting or the toolbar) turns all of them off.
Bureau of Morality terminal interface, not source material
The composition follows the reference you supplied: a reversed bar with the Bureau's name, a circular seal, a heavy caps line, generous empty space. The seal is drawn for this page (rings, four ticks, three redaction bars). It does not reproduce the original emblem. Copy: BUREAU OF MORALITY / CULTURAL ARCHIVE ACCESS TERMINAL / ESTABLISHING CONNECTION… / VERIFYING ARCHIVE INTEGRITY… / RETRIEVING YEAR ZERO FILES… / ACCESS GRANTED. A note on the screen says the interface is fictional, is not a historical document, and identifies no one.
Logic: shown once per session (sessionStorage, and if storage is blocked it still works, it just shows again). Each line appears when its real milestone is reached, at most 140ms apart; it never waits to look busy. A 6s safety timeout opens the archive even if a font stalls. With reduced motion, the lines appear without pacing, there is no band slip, and the screen cuts straight to the article. While it is up, the article is inert so keyboard focus stays on «Skip intro».
Imagery and graphic treatments
- Photography: documentary only (objects, screens, prints, live shots of the period), shown as photocopies: hard contrast, toner grain, occasional streaks. Every image carries a source slot.
- Original vs interface: «Оригинал YZ» (solid label) marks Year Zero material; «Реконструкция» and «добавлено» (dashed labels) mark what this page created. The same labels appear in placeholders, case files and the credits.
- Artifacts as outline line‑art: flash drive, shirt, disc, browser, document, ticket, drawn at 2px stroke, for the scatter field and the reader icons.
- Label tape: names, terms and evidence titles on straight black tape, the same strip as the Bureau bar.
- Redaction bars: solid bars over words that retract, used once, on the suppression quote.
- Spectrogram: grayscale, like a printout. Only the playhead is red.
- Grain and interference: grain behind display sections and in placeholders; one band slip when the archive opens. No glitch loops, no flashing, nothing under body text.
Assets to produce every gray dithered box in the story
- Flash drive photo, 4:5 (suggested addition).
